A guide for newcomers and novices

You can get Comma installed with OpenPilot and running in just TWO easy steps:
1. Physical installation of the Comma 3X device
2. Software installation of openpilot onto the Comma 3X device (Super easy, you just use an install URL for openpilot, or the other forks, read more in Step 2)

Step 1: Install the Comma 3X in your car

Once you buy your Comma and have your compatible vehicle, you will be able to install your Comma Physically in your car. Follow this Official Guide to install the Comma 3X device. It has video and text/image based instructions.

Step 2: Install the openpilot software onto the Comma 3X device

Once you have the Comma 3X device physically installed. You will now have to install openpiot software:

Follow our guide here to install openpilot

This is also where you can choose to install different forks.
Forks of openpilot, are different versions of openpilot. Since openpilot is open sourced, people can take the base openpilot software, modify it and add different features. That’s basically what the other forks are. There’s a lot of forks out there, but 3 other main ones that are safe.

Here is the list of installation guides we have for the main forks:

What is openpilot and how well does it work?

openpilot is the software which is installed on the Comma 3X, made by the company Comma.

The Comma device will attach to your cars existing LKAS (Lane Keep Assist System) and takes over the electrical steering, throttle and brake control.
This allows openpilot to interface with the car and provide its features.

openpilot is insanely better than your stock LKAS, it can drive on highways for HOURS without ANY human interactions. You can select 3 different driving personalities:

1. Aggressive: Fast acceleration, short driving distance from the car in front of you
2. Standard: Normal acceleration, normal driving distance
3. Relaxed: Slow acceleration, far driving distance. This is the smoothest option.

Some forks also have a more aggressive option called “Traffic Mode” (frogpilot) or “Maniac Mode” (SunnyPilot). These modes are for bumper to bumper traffic so that people don’t keep cutting you off.

Anyways, openpilots steering is much stronger than your standard lane keep assist, and it allows you to relax more while driving.
openpilot also adds:
Driver Monitoring, Automated Lane Changes, and an overall better driving experience.

There’s thousands of users who can’t live without it once they get it.

Comma also has a very relaxed return policy, so if you don’t like it, you can return it. We bet, you will not as long as you get it running properly.
