This is the Comma/openpilot guide for newbies.
What is Comma?
Comma is a company. They make the Comma 3X. They also made the Comma 3,Comma 2 and Comma 1.
The Comma 3X/3/2 improve/add on to your cars original driving assistant features.
If the car is on the Comma Compatibility list, then the comma will be able to control the electronic steering and gas/braking system to self drive with no input.
What is openpilot
openpilot is the open source Ai software made by Comma. openpilot is similar to other Ai softwares you have seen (Like ChatGPT), except it drives your car!
Comma trains openpilot on hundreds of gigabytes of data. They then put the trained model onto the Comma 3X device. Which is then able to drive your car.

What are the other branches/versions of openpilot? (DragonPilot, SunnyPilot, FrogPilot)
Because openpilot is an opensource software, anyone is able to go on the openpilot GitHub and make their own fork/branch. Basically, they are able to copy all the code for openpilot, modify it, add their own features, etc.
That is what the other branches are.
The communities for the big three branches (Sunny, Frog, Dragon) are huge and very well supported. People can request tweaks, develop and support themselves and just talk about the software in their perspective Discords. (Dragon has a facebook page).
These branches are safe. There are some unsafe branches but my site will not have any of those listed.

Does openpilot require any advanced coding?
Absolutely not. It’s simple as 1,2,3:
1. Install the Comma 3X Device physically
2. Install openpilot with an install URL (Guide here)
3. Start Driving with openpilot
If you are an advanced user, you can SSH into the Comma, get your video files, and make software changes.
There are also some very smart people who contribute to opensource software to make the experience better. Learn more about the other branches/forks made by the communities here.
How to install the openpilot software
We have a comprehensive guide on how to install openpilot
We also have guide for all the other branches/forks
What are all these terms and phrases? (LKAS, DP, C3, etc.)
My car isn’t on the list, can I add it myself.
This is another instance of when you will need some advanced coding.
Porting a car over to the openpilot system can be hard.
1. You need to have a harness made (You would do this using the Panda and custom harness made by you)
2. You will need to create the connection in software from the panda to your car.
If you are able to do this, that would be helping the community. You can submit that to the GitHub and potential for Comma to add it for everyone else to use.

How to physically install the Comma Device to your car
Here is the official Comma Guide: https://comma.ai/setup/comma-3x
It’s very easy, Comma basically splits into your cars existing lane keep assist features. It doesn’t ‘hack’ into anything, and it definitely does NOT void your cars warranty or anything.
It is very intrusive and fairly easy to install.
